Raw materials

The aquaculture value chain starts with the catch of industrial fish and harvest of vegetable raw materials.

Small pelagic fish which are unattractive for human consumption and trimmings from the fish processing industry are primarily used for fish oil and fish meal production. Vegetable raw materials include farmed products such as soy bean, rape seed, and wheat.

Industrial catch

The second step in the chain is the manufacture of fish meal and fish oil from the industrial fish and the processing of vegetable raw materials to extract fatty acids, proteins, and starch. One kilo industrial fish yields an average of around 3-5 % fish oil and 20-25 % fish meal, the rest is water.

BioMar carefully selects raw material suppliers, and regular supplier audits ensure that our suppliers always live up to our high quality standards. Sustainability is a key element in our sourcing of raw materials, and BioMar makes an active contribution to sustainability by using ingredients obtained from sustainable resources.
