Focus on food safety
Food safety is essential to BioMar. We see it as one of our most important tasks to reach the highest possible level as regards to food safety and we have strict internal procedures for all processes at all our facilities and we apply a level of control, which often exceeds official requirements.
In order to ensure food safety BioMar applies risk analysis in accordance with the principals of the internationally recognized Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Point (HACCP) standard in all our factories. This risk analysis produce a list of potentially critical areas in the production and processing of fish feeds. The aim is to be able to take preventive steps to reduce, or if possible, completely eliminate hazards; to take corrective actions if control limits are not met; and finally continuously to document and verify requirements.
But safety is not just a question of the standard in one link in the food production chain. Food safety is a vital aspect of the whole food production chain, and it involves in-depth control and inspection at all stages of the value chain from raw material manufacture until the final fish product reach the consumer.
Complete traceability is fundamental to food safety. BioMar procedures and registrations contribute to full traceability both forwards and backwards in the food production chain. On the basis of a feed’s production number, all ingredients in the feed can be traced back through BioMar’s production and warehouses to the supplier of each individual raw material. Similarly, any raw material or finished feed can be traced to the individual farmer, who has received the feed from BioMar.
We regularly audit raw material suppliers in order to verify that standards are met at their production and storage facilities, and routine analysis for undesirable substances in raw materials as well as finish feed products are performed in order to secure that all feed products comply with safety norms. In case of deviations from the norm rapid response procedures are in place ensuring that the necessary corrective measures will be taken.
Carefully devised food safety programs in this way ensures that farmed fish are always healthy and safe to eat.
